Folkdance folkolre festival in Spain
World Folkdance Festival - Palma de Mallorca 2009
Palma de Mallorca, Spain
April, 2009

The World Folkdance Festival is organized to join together the different and sometimes very divers cultures, through music and dance. It is a moving spectacle of colour and enthusiasm which offers a wonderful collection of cultures from all over the World.

Since the first World Folkdance Festival in Munich, Germany in 1985, thousands of dancers from more than 67 countries have graced the stages and brought delight to audiences.

From 1987 onwards, the event has been held in Palma de Mallorca to where, participants from all parts of the world have travelled to perform their ancient craft. In 1989, for instance 65 groups arrived with over 1.500 participants and in 1991, the numbers reached more than 2.000 dancers and musicians performing.

On each occasion, the International Jury has rewarded particular excellence with cash prizes and trophies for the best dances and performances.

The World Folkdance Festival is organized to bring together different and sometimes remote cultures through music and dance. Spectacle and excitement, colour and fun come together in an international showcase of the world's cultural heritage.

From the delicate movements of the Oriental Bharata Natya and the Bugaku, to the Zulu war dances which have contributed much to Contemporary Dance in the West; and from the spirited Gopak, of Central Europe to the gentle swaying follow-my-leader Farandole, the differences between the cultures have combined to provide a kaleidoscope of wonder.

Whether in simple performance or as part of the International Competition, the skill and practice of the dancers and musicians conspire to bring history alive to recall the traditions passed down through ages.
