14th Annual Ottawa Folk Festival Ottawa, Canada August 16 - August 19, 2007The CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival has been a spectacular success since its inception in 1994. The festival was established to showcase Canada's folk traditions through music, dance, storytelling and crafts. The festival has grown from a vision to "one of the premier North American events of its kind...", according to Allan Wigney of The Ottawa Sun. Ottawa is home to many festivals. The CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival is known for its relaxed atmosphere, enthusiastic grassroots following and loyal volunteer contingent. What a great way to enjoy some of the best folk music offered in the country!
The CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival was founded by Max Wallace and Chris White. Wallace, who was then the station manager of community radio station CKCU, teamed up with White, a performing songwriter. The two envisioned the festival and worked extremely hard along with an enthusiastic organizing committee and an army of volunteers helped to make their vision a reality. The festival was launched with a magical day of entertainment on Victoria Island. The next year the festival moved to Britannia Park, where it has since flourished. The inspiration for the CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival dates back more than 20 years. From 1976 to 1979, Ottawa was home to the Festival for the Folks, one of the major Canadian music festivals. After the Festival for the Folks ended, Ottawa continued to be a major centre for folk music. Since 1975, The Ottawa Folklore Centre has provided musical instruments and lessons. Rasputin's, one of Canada's finest folk venues, continues to thrive after two decades. Ottawa is also the home of Canadian Spaces, the longest running Canadian folk radio show. The CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival is considered an important cultural and community event. The festival is made possible by the generous support of sponsors, organizers and volunteers. There are many ways to support the festival. You can attend the festival, work as a volunteer or become a Friend of the Festival. Together we can ensure that the festival continues to showcase Canadian folk traditions through music, dance, storytelling and crafts.
