Yarmarka - Folk Music & Dance Group
Perm, Russia

For Russians the word "YARMARKA" means not only an open air market place where merchants came to sell their goods and peasants from near-by villages to buy. It was also a place where people had great fun, took part in folk plays, watched amusing buffoons, listened to chastooshka full of mirth and danced together. Yarmarka was a real holiday!

The name YARMARKA has been chosen for the group by its first participants and managers - German Samarin, Victor Kuzminov, Natalia Gnedykh, Sergei Tchaynikov, Ludmila Zamri, Tatyana Trushnikova, Nadezhda Kuzminova, Ludmila Tsirulnikova and others.

February 1988 became a month when the group was officially established. Since 1989 the ensemble has taken an active part in various festivals and contests in the Perm area and abroad.

The group has been successfully performed at the Goad Will Games in Seattle, the USA (1990), Festival in France (1991), Festivals in the (USA (1992), Greece (1991), Germany (1993), guest performances in Luxemburg and Germany (1994), Great Tour in France (1994-1996), the Charity project I or Perm Children Cancer Hospital in Indiana, the USA (September-October 1997).

In the repertoire Of the ensemble there are its own versions of Russian folk songs including folklore of Perm area and Russia, musical and choreographic compositions, orchestra plays as well as other songs and dances.

Specific arrangements f or choral songs and orchestra plays, humour and artistic nature - this is what makes a hospitable atmosphere at YARMARKA's shows.

During the last ten years more than thirty young people passed through the creative school of YARMARKA and all of them keep their love and faith to the group and is traditions - full self-expression, sincere performing and respect from the audience.

There are many folk groups in Russia, but YARMARKA is one of the most original! The word "folk" was, and is today, used to describe esthetically something of importance which will last for ages.

In singing Russian folk songs the rule is to sing in a manner which is comfortable for the singer. YARMARKA often takes a simple two-voice song and performs it with 6, 8 or even more voices while adding accompaniment voices underneath. The ability to combine groups of voices together and arrange them beautifully and correctly as a flowing river will be apparent as you experience listening to YARMARKA.

Traditionally, the instruments have the same rights in a composition as the singers. In YARMARKA you will hear zhalejka, fife, balalaika, gush (an old Russian stringed instrument), domra, drum, double-row accordion, shepherd's horn, treshchotki, tambourine bells, flute, Russian accordion. The orchestra and voices are combined perfectly and they masterfully demonstrate the playing of folk musical instruments.

The folk dancing is also very impressive. Round dance playing which combines a composition of song and dance into a small

In this repertoire you will find melodies and folk music representing various regions of Russia and the Urals which have been orchestrated and interpreted by our own directors.

More than 15 times YARMARKA has represented the Russian culture abroad participating in International festivals in the USA, France, Greece and others. YARMARKA has also performed during tours in Belgium, the USA, Luxembourg and Poland.

YARMARKA is a group of creative enthusiasts who are constantly trying to find new and expressive ways to realise the ideas of their masters.
