Koco Racin Macedonian Ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs
Skopje, Macedonia

55 years ago, the free city of Skopje and other cities as well, parallel with the reconstruction and development of the country experienced a notable revival of cultural life. It was a period of fervour and enthusiasm, a period of the first youth worker actions, of language classes, and the institution of various forms of raising cultural awareness. In such a rich dynamic atmosphere, arose the first worker cultural artistic company in Skopje. This company was given the name of the leading pottery worker and revolutionary, fighter and principal of Macedonian literature, poet Koco Racin.

The founding assembly of the Cultural-artistic company `Koco Racin`, Skopje was held on the 29 of September 1946. Dimce Bojanovski-Dize, then Minister of Trade in the government of the People’s Republic of Macedonia was chosen president. KUD `Koco Racin` began its activities with several sections, the most active of which were the section for dance and choir. The Ensemble received its first international recognition in 1947 when its dance group shared Second Place (in competition with ensembles from 72 other countries) at the World Youth Festival in Prague with KUD `Ivo Lola Ribar` of Belgrade and `Joza Vlahovic` of Zagreb.

As a result of greater and greater successes of KUD `Koco Racin` during the period of 1951-1956, when membership in the dance section rapidly increased, the Cultural Dedication Commission of the City of Skopje decided in 1956 to grant this particular section individual status as a company with its own board and by-laws. Thus the two sections of dance and choir each became autonomous. The folk group, now the Company of folk song and dance, from that day to the present began its activities under the patronage of the Syndicate of builders, operations and industry of Macedonia under the same name KUD `Koco Racin` - Skopje. In 1957, after a pause in the organization of tours abroad, the company participated in the International Folklore festival in Dijon, France where they won First Place. From this victory, the members of the company with imposing success began to pave the way to the affirmation of our rich cultural and artistic heritage of the people's folklore, customs and traditions. From the founding of the company in 1946 to today, the Ensemble has given over 5000 concerts in various cities and places both at home and abroad. On the international level, the Ensemble has realized over 150 tours with more than 1500 performances in places such as Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.

Ensemble `Koco Racin` has received more than 300 national and international recognitions, plaques, pennants, medals, flags, diplomas and other valuable objects, which for more than 50 years have decorated the cabinets and shelves of the Ensemble.

Repertoire:
Ensemble `Koco Racin`, successfully preserves the jewels of Macedonian folklore: `Teskoto`, `Nevestinsko`, `Dracevka`, `Kalajdjisko`, `Sedenka` and others. With the promotion of `Tutunoberacite`, `Zetvarka`, `Grozdober` and `Osogovska-Malesevska Folk Medley` realized in this later period, today’s generation makes its contribution to the quality and renowned repertoire of earlier times.
